University of Groningen CHIRALITY IN NONLINEAR OPTICS AND OPTICAL SWITCHING
Chirality in molecular opto-electronics is limited sofar to the use of optically active liquid crystals and a number of optical phenomena are related to the helical macroscopic structure obtained by using one enantiomer, only. In this paper, the use of chirality in nonlinear optics and optical switching is demonstrated. The additional options offered by the combination of circularly polarized l...
متن کاملA chirality switching device designed with transformation optics.
Based on transformation optics theory, we designed a chirality switching device, such that an object hidden inside would exhibit a reversed chirality (i.e., from left-handedness to right-handedness) for an observer at the far field. Distinct from a perfect mirror which also creates a chirality-reversed image, our device makes the original object completely invisible to the far field observer. N...
متن کاملNonlinear optical switching matrix.
We show that nonlinear directional couplers with variable coupling coefficients can be used to compose a special kind of switching matrix. The switching matrix can be controlled by the signal itself or by a strong pump. Light routing is realized by adjustment of the power of the signal or the pump. Because light routing is based on the optical Kerr effect, ultrafast routing is possible.
متن کاملOptical Chirality Enhancement in Twisted Arrays of Plasmonic Nano-rods
An important property of electromagnetic fields, which arises from the interaction between fields and chiral molecules, is called optical chirality. By enhancing this field property, while maintaining constant input power, we are able to increase absorption of circularly polarized light by chiral molecules of a certain handedness. This enhancement is achieved through the use of achiral plasmoni...
متن کاملProbing chirality fluctuations in molecules by nonlinear optical spectroscopy.
Symmetry breaking caused by geometric fluctuations can enable processes that are otherwise forbidden. An example is a perylene bisimide dyad whose dipole moments are perpendicular to each other. Förster-type energy transfer is thus forbidden at the equilibrium geometry since the dipolar coupling vanishes. Yet, fluctuations of the geometric arrangement have been shown to induce finite energy tra...
